The bond market is closed for Columbus Day on Monday, so the week starts quietly. It won’t stay that way.
Tuesday
JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup are scheduled to report third-quarter results. The National Association of Realtors publishes September existing-home sales, the first look at closings from contracts signed while mortgage rates were still below 7%.
Wednesday
The September consumer price index. August’s reading showed prices up 3.4% from a year earlier, with gasoline up 27.4%. The Fed’s Beige Book follows, and Bank of America and Morgan Stanley report.
Thursday and Friday
Retail sales and producer prices for September arrive Thursday, along with Freddie Mac’s weekly mortgage rate survey after seven straight weekly increases. Industrial production closes the week on Friday.
The Fed meets again on October 27–28. After last week’s minutes, markets put the odds of a December rate hike at about 69%.
